November 23, 2024, New Zealand Ways with Orff

On November 23, music education students and teachers across Hawai`i gathered for a workshop about Maori culture and music with Dr. Millie Locke. They learned to incorporate music from New Zealand into Orff activities and presented Hawaiian mele and hula.

Mrs. Lauren Fagaragan (President of HOSA), expressed, “Thank you for attending and participating in the HOSA workshop yesterday. We could not do it without your kokua, especially coming early and staying after to help set up and clean up. I want to commend you for doing it anyway and assure you that even though you may not realize it, it IS good for you. Also, I truly appreciate your active participation. Thank you for sharing your short presentation with Dr. Locke (from New Zealand). I know it took additional time to prepare, but you did a nice job, and it was very meaningful. She was impressed by all of you and is hopeful for the future of music education. We wanted to exchange knowledge between our two cultures, and as you can tell, we have a lot to learn from each other.”


October 16, 2024, Voice Bridge Day

On October 16, high school choir students from Waipahu High School, Trinity Christian School, and Le Jardin Academy visited the music department to meet the music education and voice faculty, sing with the Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, and tour the UH campus.


September 8, 2024, HOSA workshop: Ran Annim - Come Learn about Chuuk Culture, Songs, and Dance

On Semtember 8, local music teachers and UHM NAfME members attended a workshop about Chuuk music and culture with Mama Innocenta. They discussed Chuuk values, learned a Chuuk stick dance, and watched performances by Pacific Voices.


March 3, 2024, Dalcroze workshop

On March 3, music education students and teachers across Hawai‘i gathered for a Dalcroze workshop with Lauren Hodgson. They participated in a variety of activities to learn to sequence Dalcroze Eurythmics in the classroom.


February 15, 2024, Symphony of the Hawai‘i Forests

On February 15, members of the University of Hawai‘i NAfME collegiate chapter introduced their instruments to students from schools across O‘ahu and led students in a hula about the water cycle. Through this event, keiki learned to care for Hawai‘i’s forests and experienced original music by Dr. Takuma Itoh, performed by the Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra.

February 8, 2024, Symphony of the Hawai‘i Forests at Waiau Elementary

On February 8, UHM music education students visited Waiau Elementary School to teach fourth and fifth graders about their instruments, along with a hula about the water cycle for Symphony of the Hawaiian Forests.


January 28, 2024, HOSA Chapter Sharing

On January 28, UHM NAfME members and teachers across Hawai‘i attended a workshop led by members of HOSA to learn about culturally responsive teaching through folksongs, games, and movement.


January 14-15, 2024, HMEA

On January 14-15, members of the University of Hawai‘i NAfME collegiate chapter and Hawai‘i’s teachers gathered for Hawai‘i’s annual music education conference. They attended workshops led by local educators along with Keynote speaker, Scott Sheehan, NAfME National President.
