February 15-16th, 2025 HMEA Conference

On February 15–16, 2025, music educators from across Hawai‘i gathered at Windward Community College for the annual HMEA In-Service Conference, themed "Creative Music Teaching in the 21st Century Classrooms." Keynote speaker Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser, along with presenters such as Michael Stone, Alex Schumacker, and Steve Andre, led engaging sessions on leadership, advocacy, vocal techniques, and student retention. Attendees also participated in workshops by local educators, exploring innovative strategies and culturally responsive teaching. 


February 14th, Na Leo Hou (Choral Festival)

 

On February 14, 2025, UHM NAfME members assisted at Nā Leo Hou, Hawai‘i’s high school choral festival. They helped facilitate meals and set-up, along with performing for the high school students as part of the UH Chamber Singers.


March 9th, HOSA Workshop: Letting Go: Making Space for Improvisation in the Elementary Classroom

On March 9, music education students and teachers across Hawai‘i gathered for a workshop with Allen Moody, hosted by the Hawai‘i Orff Schulwerk Association. Participants explored ways to make space for improvisation in the elementary music classroom using the Orff Schulwerk approach. They engaged in hands-on activities that incorporated student choice, movement, instruments, and composition.
