In August 2023, a fire destroyed Lāhainā, a historical town on Maui. Many students were affected by this tragedy. They were unable to return to school for a period of time. Although some students were able to return to a “normal” life, the stress they have endured has had a profound impact on them.
O Kou Aloha was a piece of mele that was given to Lāhaināluna High School by the late Kunu Hula John K. Lake in honor of David Malo Day in 1992. It is a song that closely bonds with the Lāhainā community. Dr. Yasui arranged this piece, and Kumu Carolee Nishi and Robyn Koraoka choreographed the hula.
The NAfME 418 chapter and our `ukulele ohana would like to dedicate this mele hula to the Lāhainā students to embody the `ohana spirit. We want to exhibit our Aloha `Aina, or love of the land and its people, to the Lāhainā community. E nānea mai (Enjoy)!
With great honor, out of 41 Chapter of Excellence applicants, the Collegiate 418 chapter of the UHM was selected as one of the award recipients. According to Ben Reyes, NAfME Membership Manager, this was the largest applicant pool and one of the most competitive in recent years. This June, these chapters will be acknowledged at the NAfME Collegiate Chapters of nine schools as "Chapters of Excellence" during the NAfME National Leadership Assembly. Kudos to the board members!
